Understanding Gas Fees
What is Gas?
Gas is the unit of measurement for computational work on blockchain networks. Every operation (sending tokens, swapping on a DEX, minting NFTs) requires a certain amount of gas.
Gas Components
The maximum amount of gas you're willing to use. If your transaction uses less, you get refunded. Common limits: 21,000 for ETH transfer, 65,000 for ERC20 transfer.
How much you pay per unit of gas. 1 Gwei = 0.000000001 ETH. Higher gas price = faster confirmation.
Additional tip to miners/validators to prioritize your transaction. Only on Ethereum mainnet post-EIP-1559.
Gas Price Tiers
Lowest cost, best for non-urgent transactions
Balanced speed and cost
Higher cost for quick confirmation
Highest cost, near-instant
Why Gas Differs by Chain
| Chain | Type | Avg Gas Cost | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethereum | L1 (Mainnet) | $5-50+ | ~15 seconds/block |
| Arbitrum | L2 (Optimistic) | $0.10-2 | ~0.3 seconds/block |
| Optimism | L2 (Optimistic) | $0.10-2 | ~2 seconds/block |
| Base | L2 (Optimistic) | $0.05-1 | ~2 seconds/block |
| Polygon | Sidechain | $0.01-0.50 | ~2 seconds/block |
How to Save on Gas Fees
Use Layer 2 Networks
Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base offer 50-100x cheaper gas than Ethereum mainnet while maintaining security.
Time Your Transactions
Gas prices are lowest on weekends and during off-peak hours (2-6 AM UTC). Check current rates before transacting.
Batch Your Transactions
If possible, group multiple operations into one transaction. Some wallets and protocols support batching.
Use Gas Tokens (Advanced)
Chi (CHI) and GST2 tokens can be minted when gas is cheap and burned to offset costs when gas is expensive.
Set Appropriate Speed
Don't always use "Fast" - for non-urgent transactions, "Slow" can save 20-40% on gas costs.
Common Gas Fee Mistakes
❌ Setting Gas Limit Too Low
If gas runs out mid-transaction, it fails but you still pay. Always use recommended gas limits or slightly higher.
❌ Overpaying for Simple Transfers
ETH transfers only need 21,000 gas. Don't set it higher or you're wasting money.
❌ Ignoring Network Congestion
Check gas prices before transacting. During NFT mints or market volatility, gas can spike 10x+.
❌ Not Using L2s for Frequent Operations
If you're doing 10+ transactions per month, L2s will save you significant money. Bridge once, transact cheaply.
